Fortis 820 Prime High Adhesion Epoxy Primer

Fortis 820 Prime is a high-solids, high-adhesion two-component epoxy primer for concrete and difficult substrates. It provides excellent substrate wetting and can be applied to suitably prepared slightly damp concrete before compatible epoxy flooring systems.

Fortis 820 Prime is a high-solids, two-component epoxy primer formulated to provide excellent adhesion to concrete, porous mineral surfaces and other compatible substrates before application of epoxy flooring systems.

The formulation provides excellent substrate wetting and adhesion, helping penetrate and consolidate prepared concrete while creating a reliable bonding layer for subsequent coatings. Its high-adhesion characteristics make 820 Prime particularly suitable for poor, porous or difficult concrete surfaces where a conventional primer may not provide sufficient substrate consolidation.

Fortis 820 Prime can also be applied to suitably prepared slightly damp concrete, providing greater flexibility where completely dry substrate conditions are difficult to achieve. The surface must be free from standing water and moisture conditions must be assessed before application.

820 Prime is suitable beneath compatible Fortis epoxy floor coatings including Coat 823 HS and Coat 824 SL. It can also be used as a clear single-coat sealer and dust-proofer on suitable concrete surfaces.

Where rising damp, hydrostatic pressure or significant moisture vapour transmission is present, use an appropriate HydroFort™ epoxy vapour barrier system rather than relying on 820 Prime as a moisture barrier.

Correct mechanical surface preparation remains essential for reliable adhesion and long-term flooring performance.

Product Application

Typical Applications

Fortis 820 Prime is designed for priming concrete before epoxy flooring systems in factories, warehouses, workshops, garages, manufacturing facilities and commercial or industrial floors. It is particularly suited to porous, poor or difficult concrete and suitably prepared slightly damp substrates.

Application

Fortis 820 Prime can be applied by brush, roller or suitable application equipment. For roller application, pour the mixed material onto the prepared floor in ribbons and distribute evenly using a suitable microfibre roller.

Thoroughly mix Parts A and B before measuring. Combine 4 Parts Resin (Part A) with 1 Part Hardener (Part B) by volume and mix at low speed using a Jiffy-style mechanical mixer.

Mix until smooth and homogeneous while minimising air entrainment. Ensure material from the sides and bottom of the container is incorporated. Allow the mixed material to stand for approximately one minute before briefly remixing.

Porous substrates may require additional wet-on-wet application to achieve a uniformly primed surface. Mix only enough material for immediate use and apply within the stated working time.

Surfaces

Suitable Surfaces

Suitable for mechanically prepared concrete, porous mineral substrates and compatible existing surfaces where excellent adhesion and substrate wetting are required.

Concrete must be sound and free from dust, laitance, loose material, oil, grease, curing compounds and other contaminants that may affect adhesion. Diamond grinding is the preferred preparation method because it removes weak surface material and provides a suitable profile for epoxy adhesion.

Fortis 820 Prime can be applied to suitably prepared slightly damp concrete provided there is no standing water. The product is not intended to control rising damp or significant moisture vapour transmission.

Where rising damp, hydrostatic pressure or elevated moisture transmission is suspected, investigate the substrate before coating and use an appropriate HydroFort™ epoxy vapour barrier where required.

Existing compatible coatings should be mechanically abraded and tested for adhesion before recoating.
