Fortis Coat 519 Polyurethane Floor Coating

FORTIS Coat 519 is a high-performance, single-component, moisture-curing clear polyurethane coating for concrete and timber. Available in Gloss and Matt finishes, it provides a durable, UV-resistant, non-yellowing surface for interior and exterior applications, including grind-and-seal concrete, exposed aggregate, timber floors and commercial spaces.

Information

FORTIS Coat 519 is a high-performance, single-component moisture-curing polyurethane coating designed to protect and enhance concrete and timber surfaces. Its clear, non-yellowing formulation offers excellent durability, chemical and stain resistance, with UV protection for interior and exterior applications.

Ideal for polished-look grind-and-seal concrete, exposed aggregate, timber flooring, restaurants, cafés, warehouses and commercial spaces, Coat 519 delivers a durable, trafficable finish with low odour and a xylene-free formulation.

Gloss: Suitable for building the coating system and as the final gloss finish. On new surfaces, three coats are generally recommended at the specified application rate.

Matt: Designed exclusively as a final coat over Coat 519 Gloss. For a typical new floor, apply two coats of Gloss followed by one coat of Matt to achieve a low-sheen appearance.

Both finishes provide good stain resistance; however, Coat 519 is not resistant to staining from every tyre compound. Where greater tyre-stain resistance is required, consider FORTIS UltraSpart 100 or Coat 527 Clear.

System Accessories: For quartz-rich or difficult substrates, FORTIS Polyurethane Adhesion Promoter may improve adhesion where specified.

Product Application

Surface Preparation

Surfaces must be dry, clean and free of contaminants. Mechanically grind or sand to provide a suitable key. Diamond grinding is recommended for concrete. New concrete must cure for at least 28 days. Test adhesion over existing coatings. Quartz-rich surfaces may require FORTIS Polyurethane Adhesion Promoter.

Coating System

Gloss: Apply three coats on new surfaces to achieve the recommended build. One or two coats may be sufficient for recoating.

Matt: Use only as the final coat. For new floors, apply two coats of Coat 519 Gloss followed by one coat of Coat 519 Matt.

Application

Apply using a quality 5 mm nap roller, brush or suitable spray equipment. Pour directly from the container where practical. If decanting, take only enough for approximately 30 minutes of use. Reseal the original container immediately to prevent moisture exposure. Never return unused material.

Apply at 8–10 m²/L per coat. Lightly sand with a 150-grit mesh screen to remove defects. Sand between coats after 12 hours for improved adhesion. For Matt, filter through an 80–120 micron filter before application for optimal finish.

Recoating and Curing

Gloss: recoat after 6–24 hours at 25°C and 65% RH. Matt: 6–12 hours. Times vary with temperature, humidity, ventilation and film thickness. Apply at 15–35°C; avoid cold conditions that may cause solvent entrapment.

Allow only light foot traffic for the first 2–3 days. Full cure takes approximately 7 days. Do not cover, wash or place mats on the coating before full cure. Maintain with a neutral cleaner.

Clean-Up

Allow used rollers to cure before disposal. Follow the SDS for safe handling.

Surfaces

  • Concrete Floors: Mechanically prepared concrete, including grind-and-seal floors in residential, commercial and industrial environments.
  • Exposed Aggregate: Properly cleaned and prepared exposed aggregate concrete requiring a clear protective finish.
  • Timber Floors: Prepared timber flooring requiring a durable, non-yellowing clear polyurethane coating.
  • Timber Furniture: Sanded and prepared timber furniture and interior joinery.
  • Commercial Floors: Prepared concrete floors in restaurants, cafés, warehouses and factories.
  • Decorative Flake Floors: Compatible decorative flake systems, subject to appropriate preparation and adhesion.
  • Existing Coatings: Previously coated surfaces where preparation and adhesion testing confirm compatibility.

Important: Coat 519 Matt is a final coat only and must be applied over suitable Coat 519 Gloss build coats. Quartz-rich surfaces may require FORTIS Polyurethane Adhesion Promoter.

FAQs

What is the difference between Coat 519 Gloss and Matt?

Gloss can be used for build coats and as the final gloss finish. Matt is designed only as the final coat over Coat 519 Gloss.

How many coats of Coat 519 are required?

For new surfaces, three coats are generally recommended. For a matt finish, use two coats of Gloss followed by one coat of Matt. Existing surfaces may require one or two coats depending on condition.

Can Coat 519 be used outdoors?

Yes. Coat 519 is a non-yellowing polyurethane suitable for interior and exterior concrete and timber surfaces.

Is Coat 519 suitable for garage floors?

Yes, but it is not resistant to staining from all tyre compounds. Where high tyre-stain resistance is essential, consider FORTIS UltraSpart 100 or Coat 527 Clear.

What is the coverage of Coat 519?

Both Gloss and Matt cover approximately 8–10 m²/L per coat, depending on surface porosity, profile and application conditions.

How long does Coat 519 take to cure?

Full cure takes approximately 7 days. Allow only light foot traffic for the first 2–3 days. Do not wash or cover the surface until fully cured.

Can Matt be applied directly to concrete?

No. Coat 519 Matt is intended as a final coat over Coat 519 Gloss build coats, not as a standalone coating system.
