Correct surface preparation is essential before applying a concrete sealer. The concrete must be sound, clean, sufficiently porous and within the moisture requirements of the selected sealer. Poor preparation can cause uneven penetration, whitening, poor adhesion or premature coating failure.
Remove dirt, dust, oil, grease, tyre residue, curing compounds and other contaminants. Pressure cleaning may be suitable, but allow the concrete to dry thoroughly before sealing.
Previously sealed concrete must be checked for compatibility and adhesion. Loose, peeling or incompatible coatings should be removed before applying a new sealer.
Place a small amount of clean water onto dry concrete. It should absorb and darken the surface rather than bead or remain pooled. Dense or steel-trowelled concrete may require additional mechanical or chemical preparation. Follow the selected sealer's Technical Data Sheet.
Repair defects where required and remove laitance, loose material and preparation residue. After washing or etching, rinse thoroughly and allow the surface to dry.
Do not assume concrete is dry because the surface looks dry. Check moisture against the requirements of the selected sealer. Trapped moisture beneath a film-forming sealer can cause whitening, clouding or adhesion problems.
