Concrete Acid Stain - Antique Black

Fortis Antique Black Acid Stain is a concentrated penetrating reactive stain which chemically combines with cured concrete to produce permanent variegated colouring effects. The aged antique appearance is easily achieved for any decorative concrete project.

Information

Fortis Antique Black Acid Stain gives concrete a rich, natural look with soft, mixed tones. It creates a beautiful, mottled finish that adds depth and character. No other coloring method offers the same effect. The stain soaks into the surface, creating unique shades that change depending on the concrete and how it's applied. The final look can resemble polished marble, tanned leather, natural stone, or even wood.

Applications

To achieve various shades, it may be necessary to use a different dilution ratio. Establish a test area to determine stain colour choices and dilution rates. Apply the stain to the test area and allow drying for a minimum of 4 hours. Sweep up the dry residue and then clean with a mop and bucket or with a wet/dry vacuum. The wet stain colour will provide a preview of the sealed floor. The desired dilution rate that was used for the test application should be repeated for the larger area. The stain is best applied with a non-metallic pump up or bottle sprayer by entirely wetting the surface. Immediately scrub the stain in with a soft brush or broom using a circular motion followed with a light application of stain over the brushed area to hide swirl marks. Maintain a wet edge when applying the stain to eliminate overlap marks. If the stain shade is too light, a second coat can be applied without removing the residue between stain applications. Stains may be layered wet or dry. Test the application techniques before doing the larger area.

Surfaces

Fortis Acid Stains need to soak into the concrete to give full color. They won't work properly on surfaces covered with dirt, grease, glue, coatings, or sealers. These block the stain from getting in. Before starting, make sure the surface is clean and dry. Remove any wax, oil, loose material, or anything else that could stop the stain from soaking in.

When applying stains, always use all-plastic spray bottles. ALWAYS test your dilution concentrations to ensure you obtain the colour you’re after. DO NOT use hydrochloric acid to prepare the concrete. Concrete needs to be a minimum of 14 days old before applying Acid Stain Mask off any areas not intended for staining. Acid stains can be tough and sometimes impossible to remove. Remove carpet, tile, linoleum or any other covering from the concrete. All glue, paint or any other coating must also be removed for the acid stain to penetrate and colour the concrete. DO NOT USE MURIATIC ACID! Tightly troweled or burnished slabs tend to be more difficult to stain. Open up the surface mechanically with a buffer and sanding screen or chemically.
