Fortis AD5405 D4 Long Open Time Adhesive
Fortis AD5405 is a long-working-time adhesive for timber, veneers, fibreglass, FRP and composite assembly. Its extended 40-minute working time provides greater flexibility for larger components, complex assemblies and applications where additional positioning and assembly time are required.
Information
FORTIS AD5405 is a D4 long open time, single-component moisture-curing polyurethane adhesive developed for timber bonding, laminating and industrial assembly.
The 100% solids, solvent-free formulation provides a 40-minute working time, allowing additional time for adhesive application, positioning and assembly of larger or more complex components. Typical clamp time is approximately 180 minutes under normal conditions.
AD5405 bonds a wide range of porous and compatible non-porous materials including hardwood, softwood, veneers, FRP, fibreglass and composite materials. Typical applications include furniture manufacture, cabinetry, joinery, panel assembly, composite lamination and general industrial fabrication.
The extended working time makes AD5405 particularly suitable where larger bonding areas, multiple components or more complex assemblies require additional time before clamping.
AD5405 develops a slight foaming action during moisture cure and provides excellent water and heat resistance. Once cured, the adhesive can be sanded, painted or stained.
AD5405 cures using moisture from the substrate or atmosphere. At least one bonding surface should contain sufficient moisture for effective cure. Very dry substrates may require light misting with water before assembly.
For best results, surfaces should be clean, correctly prepared and properly clamped or supported during the initial cure. Compatibility testing is recommended for coated surfaces, plastics and unfamiliar substrates.

Product Application
FORTIS AD5405 is applied directly to one bonding surface. Apply an even adhesive layer at the rate specified in the current technical data sheet, allowing for timber porosity, surface condition and the materials being bonded.
AD5405 is a single-component, moisture-curing polyurethane adhesive. Timber will normally contain sufficient natural moisture; however, very dry substrates may require light misting or wiping with water before adhesive application.
Assemble components within the 40-minute working time and apply sufficient clamping pressure to maintain close contact between the bonding surfaces. The extended working time is particularly useful for larger or more complex assemblies.
Typical clamp time is approximately 180 minutes at 20°C and 65% relative humidity. Lower temperatures or very dry conditions may extend curing time.
Excess cured adhesive may be sanded before painting or staining.
Always conduct a bonding trial when using unfamiliar timber species, coated surfaces or other materials.
Choosing the right polyurethane timber adhesive: AD5405 provides extended assembly time. For faster production, consider AD5105 (10-minute working time, 30-minute clamp time) or AD5205 (20-minute working time, 60-minute clamp time).

Surfaces
FORTIS AD5405 is suitable for bonding a range of porous and compatible non-porous materials including:
• Hardwood
• Softwood
• Victorian Ash
• Timber veneers
• Plywood
• MDF and particleboard
• Timber panels
• FRP
• Fibreglass
• Composite materials
• Furniture and joinery components
• Compatible industrial materials
AD5405 is particularly suited to larger-area bonding, laminating and complex assemblies where additional working time is required.
Surfaces must be clean and free from dust, oil, grease and other contaminants. Timber joints should provide close substrate-to-substrate contact for maximum bond strength.
AD5405 requires moisture to cure. Very dry porous substrates may be lightly misted or wiped with water to assist cure.
Compatibility testing is recommended when bonding coated surfaces, plastics, composites or unfamiliar materials.
AD5405 does not bond polyethylene or polypropylene.

Fortis AD5405 FAQs
What is Fortis AD5405?
FORTIS AD5405 is a long open time, single-component moisture-curing polyurethane adhesive for timber, veneers, FRP, fibreglass, composites and general assembly.
What is the working time of AD5405?
AD5405 provides approximately 60 minutes working time under normal conditions, making it suitable for larger bonding areas and complex assemblies.
How long should AD5405 be clamped?
Typical clamp time is approximately 180 minutes at 20°C and 65% relative humidity. Temperature, moisture and substrate type may affect cure speed.
Why choose AD5405 instead of a faster polyurethane adhesive?
AD5405 provides additional time for adhesive application, positioning and assembly before clamping. This is useful for larger components, laminating and complex assemblies.
Can AD5405 bond fibreglass and composites?
Yes. AD5405 is suitable for compatible FRP, fibreglass and composite materials. Compatibility testing is recommended before production use.
Can AD5405 bond hardwood?
Yes. AD5405 is suitable for many hardwood species and has demonstrated high wet and dry shear strength on Victorian Ash.
Can AD5405 be sanded or painted?
Yes. Once fully cured, AD5405 can be sanded and may be painted or stained.
