How to Grout Pinholes and Voids in Polished Concrete

Grinding exposes pinholes, air pockets and small voids formed during concrete placement. Filling them creates a more uniform surface that polishes consistently, accepts densifiers and protective treatments more evenly, and traps less dirt.

When Should Concrete Be Grouted?

Grout after grinding has exposed the defects but before densification and final polishing. Applying it too early can allow later grinding to expose new holes. Applying it too late can leave visible patches or residue in the finished floor.

Concrete Shield Grout 1000 is applied wet during the 120-grit grinding stage. Fine concrete dust combines with the liquid grout to produce a slurry that fills minor imperfections and blends with the surrounding concrete.

Grouting Process

  1. Remove sealer, curing compound, oil, loose dust and other contamination.
  2. Lightly dampen the concrete without leaving standing water.
  3. Apply grout only several metres ahead of the grinder so it remains wet.
  4. Grind using 120-grit diamond tooling to generate fine concrete dust.
  5. Work the resulting slurry across the floor and into exposed pores.
  6. Lightly broom away excess slurry without removing filled material.
  7. Allow the treatment to harden, then continue the specified densifying and polishing sequence.

Know the Limits

Polishing grout is for pinholes, small air pockets, pop-outs and minor surface voids. Moving cracks, deep holes, broken edges and structurally unsound concrete require an appropriate repair system. Test the complete process on a representative area before treating the floor.
