Adhesive failure is usually caused by material selection, surface preparation, application or service conditions. Examining where the joint separated is the best place to begin.

| Material tears or breaks | Substrate failure. The bond exceeded the strength of the material itself. |
| Paint or coating detaches | The adhesive remained bonded, but the underlying coating failed. |
| Failure varies across the joint | Uneven preparation, adhesive coverage, pressure, moisture or temperature. |
Photograph both failure surfaces before cleaning them. Record batch numbers, mix ratio, spread rate, temperatures, humidity, assembly time, clamp time and cure period. Compare failed and successful joints from the same production run.
Review surface preparation and application times. Repeat the bond under controlled conditions, changing one variable at a time.
