Open time, working time, clamp time and cure time describe different stages of adhesive application. Confusing them can cause poor wetting, weak joints or unnecessary production delays.

| Clamp time | The minimum period that pressure or restraint must be maintained so the joint does not move or separate. |
| Handling time | When the assembly can be moved carefully. This does not mean the bond has reached full strength. |
| Full cure | The period required for the adhesive to develop its intended final properties. |
Higher temperatures generally shorten working and cure times, while colder conditions slow them. Humidity and substrate moisture accelerate moisture-curing polyurethane adhesives. Large epoxy mixes can heat and react faster than the same quantity spread into a thin film.
Heavy spread rates, non-porous materials and poor ventilation can delay water or solvent loss. Porous materials may absorb carrier or adhesive and change the available assembly time.
Clamp pressure should maintain intimate contact without forcing excessive adhesive from the joint. Contact adhesives require firm, even pressure at assembly but normally no extended clamping. Timber, polyurethane and epoxy adhesives must remain supported until adequate handling strength develops.
Times shown in a data sheet are measured under stated conditions. Record material temperature, room temperature, humidity, spread rate and assembly time during production trials. Never load a bond solely because its minimum clamp time has passed.
